How great is Online Poker?

Poker is the fastest growing pastime in the UK right now. We have always had a love affair with the danger and glamour of poker portrayed in movies and now the advanced poker playing software has opened up the game to a much wider audience.
Apart from the fun factor, Online poker is a great way for players to win money and earn a little extra income (did you know its tax free!), for some living the dream means poker is their only source of income! So if this has aroused your interest here are some of the great reasons why more and more people are registering and winning big!
It’s Fun! It’s as much fun as playing face to face but it’s easier to bluff online! Most poker rooms have chat boxes so who knows you may even meet your Mr/Mrs Right and make some money to pay for the date!
Its So Easy! Once you have an online poker account it often takes only one click to get into a game.
It’s a learning experience! It does not matter if you do not know how to play poker. You needn’t feel embarrassment at your lack of experience. The anonymity of playing online will make you feel more confident.
It Looks Good! The online poker websites are technologically advanced and visually impressive, you get to see the table and the other players’ faces. Sites like PKR allow you to create your own image so you can pretend to be anyone you want! LTDPoker offer great free bankroll for PKR
It’s convenient. You can play from your plushy recliner in the living room if you wanted.
Variety is the Spice of Life: There is a wide variety of online poker games to play online. From Texas Hold Em to 5 Card Stud to Omaha as well as many other variations of the games and playing styles. When you start playing online you do not have to stay with one particular type of poker, you can switch between different styles of games. LTDPokerschool.com explains the basic rules of all the main types of poker as well as advanced level strategy and management advice.
You can play for free! Sites such as www.ltdpoker.com offer large free bankroll to the top sites. This means for a minimum stake of £15 you could be playing with over £100 in your account! Setting up accounts through sites such as these will give you better offers and advice than if you sign up direct.
You can win real money: Many of the Big tournament winners during 2007/08 have not been playing for very long. Online Poker is a great way to practice (often for free) but it also gives new players equal chance to enter into big money tournaments.
Poker tournaments. Many poker websites have large tournaments with a small buy-in but with large jackpots, just like WSOP and WPT! Online Poker tournaments are a great way to experience what the pro poker players experience..

Poker Bots – Are they a real Threat to Online Poker?

Concern is growing in online chat rooms and news groups devoted to poker that sophisticated card-playing robots – known as “bots” in the nomenclature of the Web – are being used on commercial gambling sites. The premise underlying online poker is that all players are humans. But with the growing availability of free poker "bot" downloads, it is becoming difficult to detect whether a player is real or a possibly unbeatable bot.
Poker playing computer programs helps human players hone their skills, but now that researchers have made programs that claims they can beat any human player, are online poker sites under threat?
Well because there's no real way to tell a program from a person. Some players could enter programs, or poker bots, as people.
Ian Fellows of the University of California in San Diego (who make the Poker Bots) concludes "It wasn't until mid-2000, [when] an algorithm was developed, that [bots] could even come close to a competent player. But now online computer poker playing may become a thing of the past," said Fellows.
Fell Omen is based on an artificial intelligence algorithm called "fictious play." The algorithm enables bots to use imperfect information. Unlike chess, for instance, players do not know what cards are held by other players. (In chess, all information is known to both players.) Normal game-tree searches like those used by chess-playing bots cannot be used for poker. Fell Omen "is all based on decision trees that tell you at any point in the course of the game, What's the probability you should raise, call or fold? Then it generates a random number and goes with that action," said Fellows. That strategy is combined with randomness that prevents other bots from guessing its strategy.
But skeptics argue the complexities of the game and the changing strategies ensure that creation of a program that can “read” opponents’ cards using screen scanning techniques and respond in real time is years away at best. They point to the handful of commercial products that claim to give online players significant advantage, which they deride are inadequate, as proof today's bots are no match for humans.
“It is pretty much a certainty that bots are playing online,” said Gautam Rao, a 43-year-old Canadian poker pro who regularly plays three high-stakes Internet games simultaneously. “… What we don’t know is how strong they are.”
Widespread use of bots capable of beating your average player would pose a significant problem for the online poker sector, which has grown exponentially in recent years and is expected to top the $1 billion revenue mark this year. Without some way of verifying the identity – and humanity – of players, the business could be significantly undercut.

Ladbrokes Poker is to set to join the Microgaming Poker Network, one of the world's leading Online Poker networks, to ensure more action for its players in both cash games and tournaments.
Ladbrokes Poker already licenses Microgaming's poker software, so Ladbrokes' customers will notice little change to the site when it begins operating within the Microgaming Poker Network from early 2009.
Play now at Ladbrokes Poker

Ladbrokes set to accept US poker bets

Ladbrokes had made the decision to enter the US market prior to the passage of a bill making the operation of an online poker room illegal in the States.
“This follows with the guidance we gave earlier this year,” John O’Reilly, Managing Director of egaming said. “We intend to take advantage of our position in the market and invest heavily in player acquisition and sign ups are up 30% on last year, and we have set a 20% growth target for NGR between now and 2010 and we are bang in line with that.”
Commenting on Ladbrokes’ decision to join the Microgaming poker network and accept US bets, in particular for its high stakes players, O’Reilly said: “Most of the poker rake is generated by the high stakes players and we have taken the decision to offer them US liquidity from the states where there is less of a legal risk. We have evaluated the legal situation and are happy with our position.
Nearly all the publicly traded Internet poker companies retreated from the US market following passage of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act in October 2006.”
Ladbrokes is a member of the FTSE 250 Index and was once part of the Hilton Group, owning the hotel brand outside of the United States.
Group pre-tax profits for the six month period to the end of June fell to £170m from £192.7m over the same period last year, the company said this morning. Excluding high rollers, gross win increased 13% to £583.3 million, pre-tax operating profits fell 2% to £130m and UK retail gross win increased 6.5% to £394.3m. Chief executive Christopher Bell commented: "The group's performance has continued to show resilience against a challenging economic backdrop. In UK retail, following a strong first four months of the year, June suffered a string of poor results affecting all channels, most notably Royal Ascot and the early stages of Euro 2008. Notwithstanding a poor fourth week during July, Group gross win for the period from 1 July to 5 of August was up 11% overall and up 6% in UK retail."
Ladbrokes owns over 2,200 retail betting shops divided between the UK, Ireland and Belgium. It also operates several online gambling websites offering sportsbook, poker, casino, games, bingo and backgammon. Ladbrokes uses the OpenBet system from Orbis Technology.
Online sports betting had performed well, O’Reilly said, with in-running revenues up 50%. “In-running will continue to be one of the drivers for us on that side of the business. Our online sportsbook is a long tail business, where we offer thousands of markets and all the small bets create a critical mass once they are added up. We have also signed a deal with the Perform Group for more live streaming events, which will add to our in-running activities,” he said

Annette Obrestad International Media Superstar (WSOPE)

Since Annette Obrestad won the WSOPE event in 2007 she has been in demand by media the world over. At 19 years old she became the Guinness Book of Records holder as the youngest winner of a WSOP bracelet as well as becoming the youngest winner of a Main Event last year, while her £1m prize money saw her overtake Annie Duke for the record for a single-event payout to a female player. The win catapulted Annette into poker stardom and having made plenty of money from the game with over $2.5m in the bank, she reveals that it is the lure of more of that famous poker wrist-candy that is fuelling her passion in the sport.
Poker is truly a global game with over 100 countries represented at this year's WSOP (the Olympics has just over 80!!) The list is too long to mention but she has featured on the front page of the largest selling newspaper in Vegas, done TV interviews for Fox & Bluff and interviews for Swedish, Norwegian, UK, French and Danish titles to mention a few. She continues to make news on and off the tables
Speaking of her WSOPE win to the Casino City Times, Obrestad said: "It was an amazing experience. But now I want to win it again. I want more. Once you already have enough money where winning more won't really change your life, you play more for the bracelet," she added. "I want to let people know who I am. I want to establish a name for myself. That's why I play now."
Proud sponsors Betfair Poker were truly delighted when she walked away with the first prize and over 1million pounds. Many will be looking forward to watching Annette's defence of her title when the 2008 WSOPE begins on September 19.
This year Betfair Poker is setting aside $1.5 MILLION to send a team to WSOP Europe in September 2008 which of course includes Annette. Make sure you are part of the excitement! There is a whole host of ways to qualify for this must attend poker event in September. Top Poker Movies

I was conducting some market research the other day for LTDPoker.com and as an opening question I asked what the group thought was the ultimate poker movie. As you can probably imagine a lively debate followed where a top spot could not ultimately be decided on.

There's probably more poker in the movies than any other game or sport, from the western bar, to high stakes tables in casinos film makers use the game to spar two characters without any actual fighting. Good acting and clever angles are a lot cheaper than a special stunts effects scene and creates more tension and insight into the character.

The unquestionable increase in popularity for the game can be traced to the resounding images we have of some of the best poker scenes on screen. Here is a list of the ones which resonate in our memories.
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) Essentially this is not a film about Poker but the direction by Guy Ritchie ensures the poker scene generates all the glamour of its underground reputation and brings it bang up to date. Whilst not the most realistic of actual game play its influence in the style of subsequent marketing of poker is clear.
Rounders (1998). Starring Matt Damon, Ed Norton and John the movie is not Oscar winning but it has plenty of table action, some ludicrous poker scenes, and an absurd lead character. Best quote: ‘Mr. Son of a bitch, let's play some cards!'
Run (1990). Starring Patrick Dempsey, run has got a great pace with great twists and original scenes. The film depicts an illegal card game in New Jersey prior to legalization of the game.
Maverick(1994) Wise Cracking gambler played by Mel Gibson tries on James Garner's worn in leather boots as the greatest card sharp of them all in this slick comedy set in the old American West. More Wild Wild West than the OK Corral but entertaining and light hearted.
A Big Hand for the Little Lady (1966). If you swallow the fact that a player can walk across the street carrying her cards in the middle of a hand, you should enjoy this movie with Henry Fonda, Joanne Woodward and a roster of fine character actors. The action centers around a poker game climaxing with "a big hand for the little lady."

The Croupier (1999) This British film starring Clive Owen in his breakthrough role focuses on the ‘House’ more than the gambler. The movie is particularly atmospheric and contemporary. Owen's performance as the alienated croupier portrays a thrilling profile of the life of a dealer and shows how real casinos operate.
Casino Royal ( 2006) The most recent of the list, starring Daniel Craig in the Bafta winning portrayal of the high end of Poker. The poker game scenes are expertly shot and filled with humorous asides and some violent escapades during breaks in the table action. Unfortunately features card combinations highly unlikely to grace the table of a player in their lifetime.

The Cincinnati Kid (1965). An up-and-coming poker player tries to prove himself in a high-stakes match against a long-time master of the game the finale scene let it down. However definitely an all time classic for poker fans the world. Best quote: "That's what it's all about, doing the wrong thing at the right time"
The Sting (1973). Staring Paul Newman and Robert Shaw The Sting features a poker game on board a train where Newman out hustles Shaw ‘All it takes is a little confidence' this film was a big hit in 1973 winning 7 academy awards.
California Split (1974). George Segal & Elliot Gould play Gardena poker players in search of a rush in the casinos and the backroom poker rooms. This is a rare attempt for a movie to show the day to day life of card-playing, sports-betting, sleep-till-noon gamblers.
The growing number of online gaming sites such as LTDPoker.com has reinvented the perception of a game that has been around for over 200 years from an after-hours past time into big business and an international phenomenon. The smaller stakes available online and the provision of free bankroll anyone can enter a game win big money pots at major tournaments; it's like the lottery, but with better odds
