How wide is the gap between online poker and live poker players ?
Whilst these steretypes may once have been trues now, in order to be a good poker player, you have to be well rounded, and most skilled players play BOTH types of poker well.
Online players watch enough poker on TV and put in enough time playing live to understand the skill of live poker. And, because of the MASSIVE number of hands online players can see (online players average twice as many hands per hour as live tables, and often play many tables at once: therefore, a young internet pro like Tom ‘durr’ Dwan has likely played more hands in four years than Doyle Brunson has in 70 years), online pros have an excellent grasp of the math and odds of the game.
Meanwhile, live players have moved onto the internet. Why? Because they can play a lot more in a shorter period of time. Players like David Benyamine, who used to spend years grinding out the biggest cash games in the casinos, can now make MILLIONS in a single month online. And because of the popularity of online poker the big names in the live poker community have made businesses out of the growing online poker community - "Devilfish" and Doyle Brunso have their own poker rooms.
So, what’s better?

Short History of Poker- before the online poker phenomenon.
A game alike to poker was first invented by the Chinese sometime before 969 A.D, and Egyptians in the 12th & 13th centuries are known to have used a form of playing cards. In 16th century Persia “Ganjifa” or “Treasure Cards” were believed to have been used for a variety of betting games. A Ganjifa deck consisted of 96 elaborate cards, made of paper thin slices of ivory or precious wood. “As Nas” was played by The Persians which utilized 25 cards, rounds of betting and hierarchical hand rankings.
“Primero dates back to 1526 and is often referred to as “poker’s mother” as it is the first confirmed version of a game directly related to modern day poker “Primero” was a 16th century Spanish game which involved three cards being dealt to each player. Bluffing, or betting high stakes whilst holding poor cards to deceive opponents, was an integral part of the game.. In the 17th and 18th centuries a French game named “Poque” and a German game named “Pochen” became very popular, believed to have been developed from Primero
When French colonials arrived in Canada they imported the game to the new world. From the beginning of the 18th century Poque was the national card game of France and when a hardy group of French-Canadian settlers founded New Orleans, its popularity spread from the state of Louisiana throughout the whole country. One of the earliest references of poker was written In 1834 by Jonathan H. In his writing he mentions rules to the "cheating game,"
During the Wild West period of United States history, a saloon with a Poker table could be found in just about every town from coast to coast. It was extremely popular during the Civil War when the soldiers of both armies played. European influence of poker ended when the joker was introduced as a wild card in 1875.
In just over two centuries, poker has never looked back. Since its humble beginning on the banks of the Mississippi, the popularity of this widely played game has grown in leaps and bounds to evolve numerous variations and sub-variations.
There have been three games that have, in turn, dominated the modern poker scene:
• 5 Card Draw rose from relative obscurity during the American Civil War to the most popular game for almost a century.
• 7 Card Stud then took over the throne shortly before WWII and maintained its position for about 40 years with the help of the new and thriving Las Vegas casino industry.
• Texas Hold’em, christened the ‘cadillac of poker’ rose to prominence in the 1970's when it was featured as the title game in the World Series of Poker. Today, Texas Hold’em is indisputably the most frequently played and most popular poker game in the world

How to turn Live poker table to talk into strategy
One of the main differences of playing live poker tournaments rather than online is the interaction between players. As well as the normal poker tells most experienced poker players will tell you that the players often give away a lot more than they realise when playing in live poker tournaments through their table talk.
Players tend to loosen up with those around them (since they're expecting to be there for a decent amount of time). While it's impossible to ever be 100% sure of what a person means when they engage in table talk, there are a few general principles and generic situations that can help you properly interpret the words of your opponents:
- Players who announce their intention to defend, they're tipping you off to how important the chips are to them. Raise it up if you have the chance.
- Players who talk about their specific cards or hands, they're usually telling a version of the truth. (i.e. if someone calls for a certain suit on the turn, it's likely that they're on some kind of draw but probably not the flush draw. If someone calls for certain cards to not hit on the river, they usually have a made hand already, but probably not a very strong hand.)
- Players who guess your hand, they're giving you a lot of information about how they think about poker in general and more specifically about how they view you as a player.
- Players who tell you the 'truth' about a hand more than a few hands after it happened, they're usually actually telling you the truth. The further away you get from the hand, the more likely it is they're actually telling the truth. This is extra-super-true if they were on tilt when the play in question happened.
People are willing to comment on how hands played out if you're a good neighbor. By starting a conversation about a particular hand, you can often get your neighbor to give up information about how he or she did play or would have played in a similar spot- especially if they're a little chatty or proud of a play they made. When people Some people always say 'nice hand' if you take down a pot without a showdown. Some people always say 'nice bet' in that situation. Some people choose between the two. Pay attention to those people, because which one they say to you in a given spot speaks volumes about how they are viewing you, and it's information you'll probably be able to use in the immediate future, especially in a tournament.
These are just a few quick examples of how to convert your opponent's words into useful information at the poker table. The next time you play a live tournament, take off your ipod every few hands and strike up a small conversation with your neighbor. You might be surprised at what they're willing to teach you if you're just willing to listen.

Are Cryptologic in Talks with PartyGaming
CryptoLogic's self-proclaimed goal is to reduce annual operating expenses by $12m-$15m, and would build its new strategy around casino licensing, its most profitable business, offering its leading games to other gaming operators and developing branded content. Cryptologic already announced a five-year licensing agreement of casino games to PartyGaming yesterday, as well as an earlier announcement to provide casino games to 888.com (Pacific Poker owner).
Jim Ryan, PartyGaming chief executive, said CryptoLogic content would enhance its market-leading position. Brian Hadfield, his counterpart at CryptoLogic, said PartyGaming was one of its biggest customer deals "and an endorsement of the branded games element of our new strategy".

The Hunt for the New British Poker Champion continues when the Gala Casinos British Poker Tour comes to Teesside with week.
After a well-attended, high spirited festival in 2007, it’s set to be every bit as enjoyable and over-subscribed as the other legs of the tour. This is the second year of the GCBPT, which was created in response to the ever increasing popularity of online poker across the UK. As well as the tour’s massive cash prize pool in excess of £1 million, poker professionals, amateur players and poker novices alike will compete for the ultimate accolade of GCBPT Champion 2008.
A series of No Limit Texas Hold’em poker tournaments will culminate in the three-day Main Event where poker players will battle it out for the title of Stockton-on-Tees GCBPT Champion 2008, along with an estimated first prize of £30,000 in cash and a seat at the GCBPT Grand Final, to be held in Bristol in December. There is £150,000 in cash prizes up for grabs across the whole event.

Online Poker Tournament Pays Student Tuition Fees
Mr. Stewart said he gave permission for an Internet gaming firm to post advertising on campus for its poker competition. A message about the tournament was also sent using the union’s Facebook account."There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain," Matt Stewart, the union’s president, said in an interview Monday.
Students play the poker online every week to win prizes, including the $5,660 tuition fee. Mr. Stewart likened the online tournament to a raffle or bursary. There’s little risk for students developing gambling addictions through it because they don’t pay to play, he said.
"It’s like a free competition to me," he said. "If you are good at it, may the best person win."
"There are so many other resources out there to get people gambling, I don’t think a free tournament is going to do it," he said, pointing out that every time students walk into a store, they see lottery tickets for sale.
Recently a student from Ohio won a remarkable $1.2million in an online tournament at The 2008 PokerStars World Championship of Online Poker
The 22 year old student from South Carolina otherwise known as Carter King eventually placed 1st in the event; capturing the WCOOP Main Event bracelet in the process, only four months after his 6th place finish in the FTOPS $2,500 event for $101k.

Annette Obrestad Player Profile
At 19 years old she became the Guinness Book of Records holder as the youngest winner of a WSOP bracelet as well as becoming the youngest winner of a Main Event last year, while her £1m prize money saw her overtake Annie Duke for the record for a single-event payout to a female player.
The win catapulted Annette into poker stardom and having made plenty of money from the game with over $2.5m in the bank, she reveals that it is the lure of more of that famous poker wrist-candy that is fuelling her passion in the sport. Poker is truly a global game with over 100 countries represented at this year's WSOP (the Olympics has just over 80!!) The list is too long to mention but she has featured on the front page of the largest selling newspaper in Vegas, done TV interviews for Fox & Bluff and interviews for Swedish, Norwegian, UK, French and Danish titles to mention a few.

Their success and growth have definitely been in part, by their sweet promotions aimed at targeting new players! Poker Tips: Texas Hold’Em Basic Rules,
It’s a very easy game to pick up – a few quick pointers and you should be able to follow the course of play, including betting and understanding what makes up a winning hand.
Most poker players enter the game of poker via Hold'em, which is why we suggest you learn these basic rules first before progressing to all the other variations on offer.
These are the basic rules for Texas Hold 'Em Poker:
Texas Hold'em can be played by between 2 and 11 players.
The game is won by the player that has assembled the best possible 5-card hand
The Blinds A blind is a bet that is made before the pocket cards are dealt to each poker player. The first two poker players to the left of the dealer pay the blinds. The Small Blind is posted by the first player and the Big Blind by the second. The size of the big and small blinds are predetermined, as well as the regular bets. The size of the small blind is half the size of the big blind. Blinds and regular bets are displayed in this format: $2/$4 or $50/$100
The Deal When the dealer is not playing, such as in Casinos and some online poker tournaments, a round disc -- known as a "dealer button" -- moves clockwise from player to player with each hand. The button marks which player would be the dealer so the blinds to move around the table and players are aware of position.
To start, you’ll be dealt two cards ‘pocket cards’ – which you’ll keep to yourself. The remaining five cards are community cards which are dealt in stages and are placed face-up in the middle to be used by every player to make hands.
Pre-Flop After the pocket cards are dealt a round of betting takes place, beginning with the poker player to the immediate left of the big blind. Players can then fold, call, or bet – depending on how good a hand they have. At this stage you have to at least call this bet to stay in the hand or fold if you don’t fancy your luck. Checking isn't an option here because the players who posted the blinds have effectively opened the betting
The action moves around the table in a clockwise direction until each player has called, folded, or raised. If nobody has raised by the time the betting gets to the big blind, they can either check their own blind or raise. If everyone bets both blinds still have the option of raising if they want or folding if someone previously has raised. These are universal Texas Hold'em poker rules.
The Flop The dealer then flips the next three cards face up on the table. These cards are called the "flop." This time the betting starts with the player to the immediate left of the dealer, regardless of whether the dealer is still active in the hand or not. The player to the left of the dealer will keep the initial action for the rest of the hand. During this and all future rounds of betting, players can check, call, raise, or fold when it's their turn to bet.
The turn card In this phase the dealer burns a card and then deals a 4th community card face up, otherwise referred to as the turn card. Again this is used by all players to construct their hands and is followed by a round of betting starting with the first remaining player left of the dealer just like after the flop.
The River In the final phase the dealer burns the final card and then deals the River – the 5th community card face up. Now that all the cards have been dealt, each player remaining in the hand can see what their best five-card hand is using any combination of seven cards -- the five community cards and the two hole cards known only to them. This is also the final round of betting. Like the previous two, this round of betting begins with the first player to the left of the dealer who is still in the hand
The showdown Here comes the crunch, time to see who takes the pot……..
Each poker player can use any, both or neither of their pocket cards in their five card hand. The first to reveal his cards is the last player to bet and then moving round the table clockwise. Players who know they’re beaten have the option of ‘mucking’ (throwing their cards away without showing). But the last player to bet (and first to show) always has to show their cards.
The winner collects the pot which is the total amount of chips which were bet on that hand. In the event of a tie the pot will be split accordingly
The great thing about online poker is that it automatically works out for you who has the best hand and thus who should be declared the winner. All the chips instantly go into your stack without you having to place them there!
A final note...
If this all seems a bit complicated, it really isn’t. The best way to get familiar with the mechanics of Texas hold ‘em is to play the game. Luckily you can play free online poker simply by signing up our Top Rated Poker Rooms

How great is Online Poker?
Apart from the fun factor, Online poker is a great way for players to win money and earn a little extra income (did you know its tax free!), for some living the dream means poker is their only source of income! So if this has aroused your interest here are some of the great reasons why more and more people are registering and winning big!
It’s Fun! It’s as much fun as playing face to face but it’s easier to bluff online! Most poker rooms have chat boxes so who knows you may even meet your Mr/Mrs Right and make some money to pay for the date!
Its So Easy! Once you have an online poker account it often takes only one click to get into a game.
It’s a learning experience! It does not matter if you do not know how to play poker. You needn’t feel embarrassment at your lack of experience. The anonymity of playing online will make you feel more confident.
It Looks Good! The online poker websites are technologically advanced and visually impressive, you get to see the table and the other players’ faces. Sites like PKR allow you to create your own image so you can pretend to be anyone you want! LTDPoker offer great free bankroll for PKR
It’s convenient. You can play from your plushy recliner in the living room if you wanted.
Variety is the Spice of Life: There is a wide variety of online poker games to play online. From Texas Hold Em to 5 Card Stud to Omaha as well as many other variations of the games and playing styles. When you start playing online you do not have to stay with one particular type of poker, you can switch between different styles of games. LTDPokerschool.com explains the basic rules of all the main types of poker as well as advanced level strategy and management advice.
You can play for free! Sites such as www.ltdpoker.com offer large free bankroll to the top sites. This means for a minimum stake of £15 you could be playing with over £100 in your account! Setting up accounts through sites such as these will give you better offers and advice than if you sign up direct.
You can win real money: Many of the Big tournament winners during 2007/08 have not been playing for very long. Online Poker is a great way to practice (often for free) but it also gives new players equal chance to enter into big money tournaments.
Poker tournaments. Many poker websites have large tournaments with a small buy-in but with large jackpots, just like WSOP and WPT! Online Poker tournaments are a great way to experience what the pro poker players experience..

Frequently asked questions about Online Poker.
LTDPoker.com offer expert advice to anyone who is looking to start playing. For those of you who have not been to their site here are a few answers to the most frequently asked questions regarding online poker and gambling on the Internet.
What is Online Poker?
Basically, online poker is just like playing poker with your friends or at a casino and the cards are dealt automatically by the computer. All you need to do is download software from a gambling site to play online poker. LTDPoker.com has full reviews of the top rated poker sites and easy downloadable software for each one.
Is online Poker legal?
The issue of Legality is really to do with the withdrawal of funds. It is not illegal for US players to play Online Poker however they are not permitted to withdraw money into their accounts. Each country may have their own laws which players should check before playing. UK players have no worries.
How safe Is online poker?
Its understandable that people are wary of giving a website their banking information or other personal information, however, the majority of online poker sites are incredibly safe and use the same type of security software that online banks use. Therefore if you feel comfortable banking online or shopping then playing poker online won’t prove any riskier and your information won’t be at risk.
How do you know if a site is legitimate?
Like anything, take caution and pay attention to the site you are considering gambling with. Look for security measures, seals from Internet organizations, or Visa verified, things of that nature. Also, check out the years of operation, amount of players, and read the internet for a variety of reviews about the website. Any website that has been around for a while, is a member of Internet organizations, and provides strong security measures is safe to play. Others that do not should be avoided. Independent sites such as LTDPoker.com will only recommend sites that have all these precautions in place so players can play worry free.
How do I receive my winnings?
When signing up each player must choose payment options. Many times it is through a bank account or an intermediary. Each website pays out at a different rate, so make sure you read about that before signing up with a particular gambling site.
Is it easy to cheat?
Online poker websites have high tech tracking software that keeps up with each player and every game they have ever played, as well as all the other players in the room. So, if you believe a player is guilty of collusion and you report them then an investigation will take place to figure it out.
Is it Rigged?
Players often say that they were wining at first then lost every hand. This leads to many accusations of rigging the cards. However the fact is that most players become a bit cocky when they win and play hands that they shouldn’t. Poker rooms make a rake off every player so it doesn’t matter to them who wins or loses. In fact the more money you have in your account the better for them!
When I started playing I had thousands of questions which is why I have joined with LTDPokerschool.com to provide a clear guide to playing poker from beginner to advanced levels. Its free to sign up and you will be able to qualify for the amazing free bankrolls LTPoker offer for the top rated poker sites

Open Letter to Michael Phelps from The Asian Poker Tour Writes an …
The Asian Poker Tour (APT) has since written him an open letter inviting him to stop off on his way home and play in the APT Macau next week.
“Dear Michael,
First of all, congratulations on your eight gold medals and world record breaking feats – what a supreme sporting achievement and I hope superstardom treats you well. However, I write this open letter to you to say that I am in a position to add weight to the argument that you should be crowned history’s ultimate sportsman.
I noticed recently that you have told your local newspaper that you were a big fan of poker and look forward to playing again. By a strange twist of fate, I represent the Asian Poker Tour and we are running Asia’s largest ever guaranteed tournament NEXT WEEK in Macau. It starts on the 27th and runs until the 31st and guarantees a prize pool of $1,500,000 and a first prize of $500,000. This is the biggest prize pool ever offered in Asia! While you are already in China, why don’t you give it a go? It would be our pleasure to fly you in, organize your accommodation and buy-you in to the tournament!
Some have said you are a ‘human dolphin’ but we’re keen to know if history’s greatest swimmer is really a fish. You may have feet that can reach angles others cannot to give you the ultimate swimming technique but just you wait until you’ve got sharks like Vegas poker legend Doyle Brunson chasing you. We’ll see how fast you really are then when they smell blood - get some flippers on those size 14’s!
Don’t bring your goggles, bring a pair of sunglasses – dive in at the deep end and we would love it if you showed us your hand. You’ve almost certainly got more chance of making good money from our $1,500,000 prize pool than securing any commercial deals! Your homecoming to a delirious country can wait.
Go all-in Michael! We’ll even get some special one-on-one lessons for you from poker’s greatest players. If it makes you happier we’ll even bring in Mark Spitz too and you can play heads-up! Some have campaigned for poker to become an Olympic sport. The fact that you are a ‘human dolphin’ doesn’t mean you will necessary get a gold medal for Texas Hold’em!
In all seriousness, come join us, you may as well while you are there! We’ll definitely show you a good time and would be honored with your presence. Get the closing ceremony over and done with first though!
Best Wishes,
Jeff Mann
The Asian Poker Tour”
Some of the biggest names in online poker including ‘Godfather of Poker’ Doyle Brunson, Todd Brunson, J.C Tran, John Juanda, Kenny Tran, Nam Le, Quinn Do, Steve Sung and APT Manila champion David Saab have committed to take part in the USD $5300 ($5000+$300) main event. Joining the stars are players who have won seats to the event by qualifying through online poker satellites at PartyPoker.com, Datapoker, Titan Poker, Bodog, JBetPoker, Virgin Poker and Poker Trillion.
The second leg of the Asian Poker Tour gets underway at the Galaxy StarWorld Hotel and Casino Resort in Macau on August 27th running until August 31st and GUARANTEES a prize pool of US$1,500,000 and a first prize of US$500,000 – the largest to date in Asia.

Satellites for this year’s £5,200 buy-in event started on PokerStars on August 4 but there are plenty set to run until late September, giving you dozens of opportunities to win a seat. A total of 60 qualifiers played in last year’s tournament – and four of those reached the top five, cashing well over a million pounds between them. Aside from Mouawad, there was rising German star Marcel Baran who won £203,840 for 3rd place, Josh Egan from New Zealand who took home £152,880 for 4th place and 19-year-old Swede Fredrik Haugen who came 5th for 124,342.
