Open Letter to Michael Phelps from The Asian Poker Tour Writes an …

Many are asking “Is the ‘Human Dolphin’ Really a Fish?” after the recent revelation by Michael Phelps the toast of Bejing and 8 time Olympic gold medalist, that he is a big poker fan.

The Asian Poker Tour (APT) has since written him an open letter inviting him to stop off on his way home and play in the APT Macau next week.

“Dear Michael,
First of all, congratulations on your eight gold medals and world record breaking feats – what a supreme sporting achievement and I hope superstardom treats you well. However, I write this open letter to you to say that I am in a position to add weight to the argument that you should be crowned history’s ultimate sportsman.
I noticed recently that you have told your local newspaper that you were a big fan of poker and look forward to playing again. By a strange twist of fate, I represent the Asian Poker Tour and we are running Asia’s largest ever guaranteed tournament NEXT WEEK in Macau. It starts on the 27th and runs until the 31st and guarantees a prize pool of $1,500,000 and a first prize of $500,000. This is the biggest prize pool ever offered in Asia! While you are already in China, why don’t you give it a go? It would be our pleasure to fly you in, organize your accommodation and buy-you in to the tournament!
Some have said you are a ‘human dolphin’ but we’re keen to know if history’s greatest swimmer is really a fish. You may have feet that can reach angles others cannot to give you the ultimate swimming technique but just you wait until you’ve got sharks like Vegas poker legend Doyle Brunson chasing you. We’ll see how fast you really are then when they smell blood - get some flippers on those size 14’s!
Don’t bring your goggles, bring a pair of sunglasses – dive in at the deep end and we would love it if you showed us your hand. You’ve almost certainly got more chance of making good money from our $1,500,000 prize pool than securing any commercial deals! Your homecoming to a delirious country can wait.
Go all-in Michael! We’ll even get some special one-on-one lessons for you from poker’s greatest players. If it makes you happier we’ll even bring in Mark Spitz too and you can play heads-up! Some have campaigned for poker to become an Olympic sport. The fact that you are a ‘human dolphin’ doesn’t mean you will necessary get a gold medal for Texas Hold’em!
In all seriousness, come join us, you may as well while you are there! We’ll definitely show you a good time and would be honored with your presence. Get the closing ceremony over and done with first though!
Best Wishes,
Jeff Mann
The Asian Poker Tour”

Republican Party Website besieged by Online Poker Protesters

In the run up to the US Presidential election political unrest is mounting with 100’s of online poker players protesting against the UIGEA (Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act)
Online poker players in the US have posted their comments, unanimously urging the US Republican Party to protect their rights to play online poker.
Over 100 online poker players were asked to post comments on a US Republican Party website where they urged the US political party to protect individual's rights to play poker online.
The PPA (Poker Players Alliance), who claims to have over one million members, urged more of its members on Thursday to post on the GOP website as well. The PPA was created as an organization that would protect poker players' rights in the U.S., and has played an integral role in defending the game since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that was passed in October 2006.
"My point is simple," posted PPA member and 2004 WSOP champion Greg Raymer. "Is the US Republican Party no longer the party of personal freedom and individual responsibility? Why has this party, that used to protect my rights, now become the party that wants to create a Nanny-state?
To be fair, a number of US Republicans have supported efforts to legalize online poker, most notably one time Presidential candidate and Texas Congressman, Ron Paul. Together with Democratic Massachusetts Congressman, Barney Frank, Paul helped draft legislation that would essentially repeal an online gambling prohibition act, the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act (UIGEA).
Some of the comments left on the site are:
“I want you to support my right to play online poker. This is a billion dollar industry in the US and there is no reason why it cannot be regulated.” - William, New Britain, CT
“I find it deplorable that we have legalized lotteries, horse & dog race betting, bingo lotto, casinos everywhere but we can't have legalized online poker in the US. All we've done is drive the online poker sites offshore. Foreign countries are reaping the tax & business revenues [as a result] of this flawed policy.” - Dennis, Framingham, MA
As of yet, no one has commented on the message board in support of banning online poker.

FTOPS events are among the most grueling in existence, its hard enough to win one Full Tilt Online Poker Series tournament: with thousands of the world’s top poker pros flocking to the online poker room chasing after the millions of dollars in guaranteed prize money. Yuvee04 pulled off a remarkable feat given that the two tournaments combined had over 4,000 entrants. There were 655 entrants and, in the end, yuvee04 emerged victorious.
Yuval Bronshtein. He’s primarily a mixed-game player, which makes him a force to be reckoned with in games like HORSE, which includes rotating rounds of Hold’em, Omaha, Razz, Stud, and Stud Eight.
At the end of the night, yuvee04 had earned over $170,000 and a pair of FTOPS victories. Kevin “BeL0WaB0Ve” Saul, a World Poker Tour champion, told Poker News Daily, “That has to be the sickest single-day accomplishment ever in online poker.” Saul added that yuvee04 excels at stud, which is part of the HORSE event.
These aren’t the first FTOPS events that yuvee04 has won. In FTOPS VI, he muscled through a field of 806 players en route to an $80,600 payday in a $109 buy-in Stud Hi-Low event, meaning he’s taken down three FTOPS tournaments during his career in three different varieties of poker.

Legal Online Poker to be Launched in U.S. – PokerTwin

Gaming and Entertainment will venture into online poker in the US. In a press release the company announced the launch of PokerTwin, a new online poker room will go live during the third quarter of 2008, which it described as “a skill game and legal in most US jurisdictions including California and New York State. PokerTwin is a Texas Hold’em-based poker game that removes the luck of the draw and lets a poker player rely on their skills to win.”
Having the exact same cards will force players to “prove their skill not by how lucky they are, but in how well they play each hand in comparison with the other player who has the same cards.” players at two different tables will be dealt the same poker hands. PokerTwin is hot on the heels of “legal” online poker room Duplicate Poker. Similar to PokerTwin, Duplicate Poker also operates on the edge of the internet gambling law in the United States.
On its website, Duplicate Poker claims, “Duplicate poker is a game of skill - the luck of the draw is one excuse your opponents won’t have. With the luck factor taken out, playing poker is no longer gambling: The Best Player Wins.”
In case you’re not familiar with the company, Carlyle Gaming and Entertainment “unites companies that have been on the cutting edge of the Internet gaming revolution with traditional casino service providers. The alliance of old school knowledge and new school know-how means that CGE companies are innovators in every area of the gambling industry.”
Legal ring games recently introduced by Duplicate Poker have buy-in ranging from $0.05 to $10, “At the outset of each hand players will have 1000 chips to play. Each player’s results will be compared with other players sitting in the same seat at participating tables. After each hand players will be rewarded a set payout for incremental increases in their chip stacks.” Again, the primary driver behind a player’s success is his or hers skill.
The announcement by Carlyle Gaming is just the latest in what will likely be a string of attempts to get around the UIGEA and Wire Act in the United States. With 300 million people within its borders, the U.S. represents a gold mine for internet gambling operators.
Club WPT, a subscription-based poker room, is another example of attempts at getting round the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. Club WPT. Introduced by the World Poker Tour, it utilises U.S. sweepstakes law in order to be deemed legal. The World Poker Tour also operates a for-profit online gambling room that does not accept U.S. players. The company just announced that Club WPT promotional tournaments will air on Fox Sports Net.

Online Poker tips: Bankroll management

One of the most important fundamentals of successful online poker is managing and setting your poker bankroll (the money you allocate to play with).

Whatever your bankroll - it needs to be treated with respect. Being realistic about your poker bankroll and Playing within your limits is the key. Put simply it doesn't matter how much you could ultimately win if you don't have enough money to get there.

Too many players start off with too little bankroll for even the low limit games and then after a couple of wins, move up a level and then get themselves into trouble.

There are many guides to calculating how much is enough for what limits -

Suggestions range between 20-50 times the max buy-in in a cash game / tournament entry, or 200-400 times the big blind. Even at the lower range of these figures this is generally a far bigger bankroll than new players think necessary.

Ben Roberts (pro Poker Player) suggests “it may be worth playing in Limit games in order to build and not lose cash in a more controlled way. This is may also be a good strategy if you are hunting poker bonuses and just trying to clear deposit bonuses with minimal bankroll.

Looking back at the broad range generally recommended here are the kind of bankroll figures they suggest for No Limit games -

With 20-50 times the $25 max buy-in buy-in a for 0.25 NL cash game it would mean a $500 - $1250 bankroll.

$5+50 SnG tournaments need a $110 - $275 bankroll.”

The important issue here is that playing in too higher limit game for your bankroll will seriously affect the way you play. If you are constantly worrying about it being your last tournie or not calling a hand because it’s the last drop of cash you have - you will not make the right choices based on the game alone.

Poker definitions: Blinds.

Poker definitions: Blinds.
There are so many words and phrases used by online poker players that are unique to the game that you may feel you need a dictionary while you're learning to play. Memorizing the meanings of terms regularly used at the poker table not only allows a beginner to follow the game more easily, learn the poker rules, adjust strategy and some terms are used just because they sound cool.
The following are some frequently used poker words. While some words you will encounter only in games using Blinds, like Omaha and Texas Hold'em, many refer to the building of a good hand, which is poker-universal.
The blinds are forced bets posted by players to the left of the dealer button in flop-style poker games. The number of blinds is usually two, but can be one or three.
The blinds exist because popular online poker formats such as Omaha and Texas hold 'em are frequently played without antes, allowing a player to fold his hand without placing a bet. The blind bets introduce a regular cost to partake in the game, thus inducing a player to enter pots in an attempt to compensate for that expense.
Before the tournament begins, the players will agree to a blinds structure, usually set by the tournament organizer. This structure defines how long each round is and how much the blinds increase per round. As the blinds increase, players need to increase their chip counts (or "stacks") to stay in the game. The blinds will eventually consume all of a player's stack if he or she does not play and win more.
Little Blind: He is the first person to act in the game, because is immediately to the left of the dealer (or person with the dealer's button), and he places an amount equal to 1/2 of the ante in the pot. No cards have been dealt yet.
Big Blind: The player to the left of the Little Blind places the Big Blind, an amount of chips equal to the ante, in the pot. Still no cards have been dealt
Defending The Blinds: Everyone has to post the Blinds eventually, since the responsibility for them goes in turn around the table according to all cardroom poker rules, so at one point or another you'll be defending the money you bet.
We always recommend finding yourself a good, complete poker dictionary, and there are some for sale online, alternatively sign up at LTDPokerschool.com for full tips and strategy.

Reimer Koester, a talented poker player from Germany is celebrating after winning $27,500 at Titan Poker's $250,000 Guaranteed Prize tournament
Koester claimed second place and $27,500 in cash at the $250,000 Guaranteed Prize tournament on Sunday the 3rd of August. The skilled player had signed up at Titan Poker, the largest poker room on the iPoker Network, just four days previously on the 31st of July 2008.
However, he is understandably delighted with his extraordinary early success and is confident that this isn't a case of 'beginners luck'.
He said: "I'm very happy that I did well in my very first tournament at Titan Poker. The tournament went smoothly and was a lot of fun - from the very start I managed to play well. Next time I'll try for first place!!"
After four days as a Titan Poker player, he opted for the popular poker room's weekly $250,000 guaranteed to be his first online tournament - and astounded everybody when he finished second place and won $27,500. The Titan Poker newcomer competed against nearly 2,000 players in this tournament for seven and a half hours, and was even leading with 4H KD as it got to the last hand. Unfortunately for Reimer, an unlucky turn on the flop ensured a pair of Sixes and victory for a rival player and second place for him.
Titan Poker stages the $250,000 Guaranteed every Sunday night. Players can buy-in directly for $200 + $15 or they can win their seat at ongoing satellite tournaments. The $250,000 Guaranteed is just one of the many guaranteed prize tournaments regularly staged at Titan Poker. V0id Case Against Pokerstars – Dropped

Natalie Teltscher, who is the sister of well-known pro poker player Mark Teltscher, will not be seeing any of the $1.2+ million that was won on her PokerStars account in the 2007 World Championship of Online Poker last fall.
Natalie Teltscher was Disqualified after 2007 WCOOP Main Event Victory when it was rumored Natalie, who owned the account TheV0id, had breached tournament rules by letting someone else play her account for the entirety of the WCOOP main event and because that
Teltscher filed a complaint in the Isle of Man courts after PokerStars disqualified her account’s victory in the Online Poker event, for which she was awarded more than $1.2 million (after the players agreed to a deal) but when faced with the evidence PokerStars collected proving that she was not the person playing under the username registered to her name (TheV0id), she eventually admitted she hadn't played. According to PokerStars, Teltscher also agreed to pay a sum of PokerStars’ legal fees.

PokerStars released the following Statement to the Press:

“PokerStars is pleased to announce that Natalie Teltscher has recently withdrawn her claim in the Isle of Man Courts against PokerStars. Furthermore, in discontinuing her claim, she has agreed to contribute a sum towards the legal costs incurred by PokerStars in this matter.

Ms Teltscher brought her claim against PokerStars because she was disqualified from first place of the 2007 WCOOP Main Event after PokerStars internal investigations demonstrated beyond doubt that she had not played on the account. On her disqualification all other players were moved one place higher in the prize table and the money confiscated from her account, TheV0id, was redistributed in full, according to the amended tournament placings.

Ms Teltscher initially claimed that she had played the account. However, when faced with the results from PokerStars’ investigation she eventually admitted she hadn’t played.

The decision of Ms Teltscher to withdraw her claim fully vindicates PokerStars’ decision to disqualify her from the tournament and subsequently defend the claim, actions which were taken in order to protect the integrity of the games on offer at PokerStars.

PokerStars is the largest poker site in the world and also considered to be one of the most secure. The 2008 WCOOP is looming and the prize pools are almost guaranteed to be some of the biggest ever offered online

UIGEA clarification act Supported by RGA

The RGA (Remote Gambling Association) is hopeful that the new bill will allow currently exiled online poker rooms like PartyPoker, Titan Poker and Pacific Poker back into the U.S. market. The Remote Gambling Association announced on Friday it would be supporting the bill on the basis that it will target online sports books and online sports betting only but not online poker. The bill titled H.R. 6663 officially known as the Unlawful Internet Enforcement Clarification and Implementation Act (UIGEACIA) was introduced to congress by Pete Sessions last week and will attempt to define what falls under the scope “unlawful internet gambling”.
"We took our case directly to U.S. legislators who have heard our message, understood the inequity of the Department of Justices' stance and appreciated both the unfairness in their enforcement policy and the risk to U.S. priority interests and its reputation if the policy was pursued further," said Chief executive of the RGA Clive Hawkswood. "This could be a major step in demonstrating that the rule of the law and integrity of the WTO are still important in Washington.
In March 2008 the RGA requested the European Union Commission investigate U.S. online gambling practices on the grounds they are discriminatory against European operators. However before one becomes too hopeful it is unlikely the bill will be passed anytime soon as congress has disbanded for a summer break and whilst it will return in September it's doubtful much will get passed in the run up to the presidential election.
The Poker Player's Alliance has decided not to endorse the bill. According to a story with the Las Vegas Review Journal the PPA has an issue with the "confusing language”. The bill says the original UIGEA has made internet poker is an unlawful activity that, in the future, will need special protection. Although that sounds good to many people the PPA takes issue with poker ever being labeled as illegal. If the Alliance were to support the bill it would be like admitting that poker is illegal.

Poker Bots – Are they a real Threat to Online Poker?

Concern is growing in online chat rooms and news groups devoted to poker that sophisticated card-playing robots – known as “bots” in the nomenclature of the Web – are being used on commercial gambling sites. The premise underlying online poker is that all players are humans. But with the growing availability of free poker "bot" downloads, it is becoming difficult to detect whether a player is real or a possibly unbeatable bot.
Poker playing computer programs helps human players hone their skills, but now that researchers have made programs that claims they can beat any human player, are online poker sites under threat?
Well because there's no real way to tell a program from a person. Some players could enter programs, or poker bots, as people.
Ian Fellows of the University of California in San Diego (who make the Poker Bots) concludes "It wasn't until mid-2000, [when] an algorithm was developed, that [bots] could even come close to a competent player. But now online computer poker playing may become a thing of the past," said Fellows.
Fell Omen is based on an artificial intelligence algorithm called "fictious play." The algorithm enables bots to use imperfect information. Unlike chess, for instance, players do not know what cards are held by other players. (In chess, all information is known to both players.) Normal game-tree searches like those used by chess-playing bots cannot be used for poker. Fell Omen "is all based on decision trees that tell you at any point in the course of the game, What's the probability you should raise, call or fold? Then it generates a random number and goes with that action," said Fellows. That strategy is combined with randomness that prevents other bots from guessing its strategy.
But skeptics argue the complexities of the game and the changing strategies ensure that creation of a program that can “read” opponents’ cards using screen scanning techniques and respond in real time is years away at best. They point to the handful of commercial products that claim to give online players significant advantage, which they deride are inadequate, as proof today's bots are no match for humans.
“It is pretty much a certainty that bots are playing online,” said Gautam Rao, a 43-year-old Canadian poker pro who regularly plays three high-stakes Internet games simultaneously. “… What we don’t know is how strong they are.”
Widespread use of bots capable of beating your average player would pose a significant problem for the online poker sector, which has grown exponentially in recent years and is expected to top the $1 billion revenue mark this year. Without some way of verifying the identity – and humanity – of players, the business could be significantly undercut.

Ladbrokes set to accept US poker bets

Ladbrokes had made the decision to enter the US market prior to the passage of a bill making the operation of an online poker room illegal in the States.
“This follows with the guidance we gave earlier this year,” John O’Reilly, Managing Director of egaming said. “We intend to take advantage of our position in the market and invest heavily in player acquisition and sign ups are up 30% on last year, and we have set a 20% growth target for NGR between now and 2010 and we are bang in line with that.”
Commenting on Ladbrokes’ decision to join the Microgaming poker network and accept US bets, in particular for its high stakes players, O’Reilly said: “Most of the poker rake is generated by the high stakes players and we have taken the decision to offer them US liquidity from the states where there is less of a legal risk. We have evaluated the legal situation and are happy with our position.
Nearly all the publicly traded Internet poker companies retreated from the US market following passage of the Unlawful Internet Gaming Enforcement Act in October 2006.”
Ladbrokes is a member of the FTSE 250 Index and was once part of the Hilton Group, owning the hotel brand outside of the United States.
Group pre-tax profits for the six month period to the end of June fell to £170m from £192.7m over the same period last year, the company said this morning. Excluding high rollers, gross win increased 13% to £583.3 million, pre-tax operating profits fell 2% to £130m and UK retail gross win increased 6.5% to £394.3m. Chief executive Christopher Bell commented: "The group's performance has continued to show resilience against a challenging economic backdrop. In UK retail, following a strong first four months of the year, June suffered a string of poor results affecting all channels, most notably Royal Ascot and the early stages of Euro 2008. Notwithstanding a poor fourth week during July, Group gross win for the period from 1 July to 5 of August was up 11% overall and up 6% in UK retail."
Ladbrokes owns over 2,200 retail betting shops divided between the UK, Ireland and Belgium. It also operates several online gambling websites offering sportsbook, poker, casino, games, bingo and backgammon. Ladbrokes uses the OpenBet system from Orbis Technology.
Online sports betting had performed well, O’Reilly said, with in-running revenues up 50%. “In-running will continue to be one of the drivers for us on that side of the business. Our online sportsbook is a long tail business, where we offer thousands of markets and all the small bets create a critical mass once they are added up. We have also signed a deal with the Perform Group for more live streaming events, which will add to our in-running activities,” he said
